29 October 2025  Luke 13:22-30 “Strive to enter through the narrow door, for many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able.” Luke 13:24   The New Testament speaks often about Jesus as a “Way,” a “Gate,” or a “Door.” “For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few” (Matthew 7:14). “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6). “Strive to enter through the narrow door.

It really doesn’t matter what the event is. It can be a positive and uplifting event like a marriage, a birth, or a graduation. It can also be a defeating and disappointing event – like a divorce, a death, or an illness. Connect it to the person and work of Jesus, and it can change the world.

The Rich Young Man’s problem was not so much that he wanted his wealth, but that he didn’t want Jesus. He was hoping maybe what he needed was one of the 613 commandments (the total number of mitzvotmentioned in the Old Testament) that he had perhaps overlooked. But it was far bigger than that. He thought he could pick up the tab for his life himself, but “Follow Me” was more than he expected to pay, and he flinched.

The devil is very happy for people to be as wealthy, powerful, and smart as they want to be. He doesn’t know any of their names. He doesn’t have to. They are no danger to him. If the devil knows who you are, that can only be because Jesus is alive in you, because you have invited Him, because you have received Him in His fullness at every Mass.

God isn’t thinking about waiting another generation for people to be ready to hear His voice. He wants us to pay attention now, and He wants us to start with the stuff we are looking at that is bad for us. Look at Me instead. Pay attention to Me.

But it isn’t Christian people who save. It isn’t the Church that saves. The Church and Christian people are not “the Way, the Truth, and the Life.” Jesus does. Jesus is. What do you say about Him? Jesus is the one that matters.

Let the weeds and wheat grow up together is the counsel of poverty and hunger. It is terrible advice. So, the Parable of the Weeds and the Wheat can be read as Jesus advice to the faithful – learn to discern the difference between temptation and the divine Word.

There are those who believe that Jesus never claimed to be God. While it is true that Jesus never in the gospels used the formula, “I am God,” there are dozens of other texts that establish Jesus’ claims to divinity.

Uncontaminated Christians bear in their persons, purely and only, the life of Jesus, and that makes them, by the mysterious alchemy of grace, the perfect version of themselves.

Do we think that there is nothing left about Jesus that is really surprising, that it has all been fully known, considered, written?
