Many churches and denominations today are disintegrating because theyhave abandoned the thought world of the Bible.

Spiritual suppleness and elasticity can be preserved, even deepened, if it is regularly saturated in prayer and reading of the Bible, rubbed in deep by the sacraments of Eucharist and Confession. Souls don’t need to be old to be dry and brittle.

If we want to hear the voice of Jesus, really hear Him, then maybe we have to stick around the Bible-talk longer than Satan did, to learn its accents and figures of speech, to anticipate where it is going and why.

The problem isn’t that we don’t know what the truth is. The problem is that just enough people have been challenging all that, and we have gotten confused.

We need to live our lives in such a way that people ask questions, and then we have to give them answers. That is what repentance looks like for us now. Because repentance is a kind of levelling up.

Jesus never did, and still doesn’t, have a problem with a spirituality based on close reading of the Bible and earnest prayer based on that close reading. He has a problem with people not doing that enough.

But if a disciple like Mary Magdalene, who was deeply tormented by a squadron of demons and was healed of that, who was a witness to the most important event in the Bible at a time when the testimony of women was routinely ignored, if even she is mentioned twelve times by name in the New Testament and was obviously a leader of significance in the earliest Church, then who is it safe to ignore?

Within a single lifetime after the Resurrection the Gospel of Jesus Christ was circulating in the two largest world languages of the ancient Mediterranean world and that Jesus Christ is the most well-attested historical figure from the entire ancient world – more than Homer, Plato, Aristotle or Caesar.

The disciples didn’t have the Bible, the sacraments, and the Holy Spirit so they had to think it through, talk it through, and write it down. We have the opportunity with all those things to “get it”.

It is important not just to listen to the thoughts of great scholars on the Bible, but just as much to think and talk about the Bible with peers, discussing and striving with each other until some fresh insight pops out.

We don’t know what our perfect self might be. But we can know Jesus.

The entire spiritual experience of God’s people is inseparable from regular and close study of the Bible.

The Bible is a place where we go to “take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ” not an answer book but a place to think & ask

He is giving people heaven. That’s what He keeps talking about: ‘The Kingdom of heaven is at hand.’”
